Matthew Johnston is a Philadelphia-area native and recent transplant to the DMV. He started his career in outpatient orthopedics, treating a wide variety of patients with musculoskeletal pain, vestibular disorders, and neurologic conditions.
More recently, Matthew has developed a specialty in men’s health physical therapy, which includes pelvic health issues. He has advanced training in treating pelvic health conditions, including bowel and bladder symptoms, orthopedic/sports-related groin pain, sexual health concerns, pre- and post-cancer treatment side effects, and orthopedic issues unique to men. He also has a special interest in the treatment of pelvic and genital pain conditions. Matthew has been involved with course development for training of other pelvic health therapists and works to advance the field of men’s pelvic health in the physical therapy community.
He has a unique approach to physical therapy by putting the patient at the center of the patient-therapist relationship. His philosophy on patient care focuses on curiosity, asking good questions and understanding each patient’s problem to the fullest extent. He wholeheartedly believes that the human body is resilient and is capable of adapting to new challenges.
He graduated from Temple University in 2016 from an accelerated degree program in Kinesiology and with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. He gained a board certification in orthopedic physical therapy in 2022. Matthew has also been an adjunct faculty member at various Physical Therapy programs and enjoys teaching and mentoring new clinicians.
Outside of his clinical work, he enjoys cooking, baking sourdough bread, and exercising. He has also recently become obsessed with pickleball. He lives in northern Virginia with his wife and golden retriever.
