As mentioned in our previous blog, lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is a repetitive stress injury to the outer portion of the elbow. Similar to many repetitive stress injuries, this diagnosis is stubborn and can take a long time to heal. It can result in a lot of frustration, pain, and difficulty performing everyday activities.
One type of treatment that has shown significant improvements for lateral epicondylitis is blood flow restriction (BFR). A recent study found that BFR treatment can help improve pain from lateral epicondylitis in as little as 6-12 weeks! This study compared BFR in combination with low-intensity strength training, manual techniques, and patient education with treatments involving no BFR.
Here are the results that these researchers found [1]:
- Significant improvement in pain-outcome scores at 6 and 12- week follow- ups
- Pain intensity decreased in 12 weeks
- Pain-free grip strength in 6 weeks
