With the end of 2015, many individuals resolve to make 2016 a better year. This is traditionally done by setting resolutions. The majority of resolutions will  focus around health whether it be eating healthier or exercising more. We believe that any positive health change is one worth making whether it be the start of a new year or in the middle of the year. So we wanted to take this post and address ways to help keep those resolutions and make the changes towards a healthier, better you.

Key elements to help keep your resolutions

  1. Make it something you really want: if your goal is to run a 5k and it is something you have always wanted to do then it helps keep you motivated versus something you ‘should’ do. You should run because it is healthy for you is not going to get you to complete that 5K.
  2. Make your goal achievable: You may have heard this one often but attempting to run a marathon when you have never run becomes a very difficult task. There are issues of time management, injuries and cross training that people often don’t consider when determining their goals.
  3. Be Specific:  Setting the components of ones’ goals also helps make the goal achievable. I will run a 5K in 6 months at a pace of 12 minutes mile. This allows you to have training parameters that if you exceed it is only another thing you have accomplished.
  4. Make a Plan:  As with running or weight loss or strength training – a plan to determine your food or training is the smartest way to help stay organized and see where you may need assistance.
  5. Limit your goals to a manageable number:  in other words it may not be a great idea to decide to run a 5K, lose 40 pounds and gain 10 pounds of muscle all in 1 month. You are setting yourself up for failure at that rate.

Whether you choose to make a resolution or just enjoy the day . . . may you reach your destination, and may your journey be wonderful.

From the staff of SetPT, we wish you a happy and very healthy new year!!
