Pregnancy and back pain are very common correlations, especially as the pregnancy progresses into later stages. However, back pain can occur at any stage of the gestational period.

In fact, between 50 to 70 percent of women experience back pain during pregnancy.

Why is Back Pain So Common?

The truth is, back pain is caused by a variety of factors. However, women who are either overweight or who have previously experienced an episode of back pain prior to pregnancy are most susceptible to the recurrence of symptoms during pregnancy.

Associated Factors

Outside of existing conditions, circumstances associated with experiencing back pain during pregnancy include:

  • Changing Hormones
The hormones allow joint laxity to occur, which enables the ligaments to stretch, thus creating less stability in the trunk.
  • Altered Center of Gravity
Due to the change in mass, one’s posture changes, causing the muscles to work harder to stabilize.
  • Added Weight
With a growing baby, weight gain is inevitable, thus more stress is put on your system in order to support the additional weight gain.

Pain Relief Tips

Back pain cannot necessarily be eradicated or prevented completely during pregnancy, but there are ways to reduce the intensity and frequency of symptoms:

  • Avoid bending at the waist; perform a squat or lunge instead to protect the spine
  • Avoid wearing heels as they work to further push one’s center of mass forward
  • Use a support belt for the lower abdomen
  • Get plenty of rest and fluids

One of the best ways to stabilize and support the trunk is by performing pre-approved exercises from your healthcare provider. If you’d like to find out how to alleviate pregnancy discomfort, schedule an appointment with your SetPT therapist today!
