This is an interview with Mark Steverson Owner of 5 Orange Theory Fitness locations in the DC Metropolitan Area.
Chris: What is Orange Theory Fitness (OTF)?
Mark: It’s a one-hour group training class that gives each person a heart rate monitor and challenges them to reach certain training zones in order to burn fat and get more fit.
Chris: What is the theory behind OTF?
Mark: The theory is we want people to get results and have them be able to monitor it. OTF is backed by the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (or EPOC), Orangetheory’s heart rate monitored training is designed to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. We call it the afterburn. Our members burn an estimated 500 to 1,000 calories in 60 minutes. And keep burning calories for up to 36 hours.
Chris: How did you get into OTF?
Mark: Well, I was always into training. I was a D1 collegiate athlete and got into various different group training programs but while I was in New York I came across orange theory fitness and I really fell in love with their philosophy and methods of getting people fit.
Chris: What type of population does OTF cater to?
Mark: It can really cater to anyone. For example, my mom who is 65 years old can be working out right next to me because we can scale the program depending on the needs of the individual. So half of the class some people can be running but my mom is on the treadmill on an incline. When she gets to the weight-training portion of the class she can scale down the weights to make sure that she is not pushing herself beyond what she’s capable of. That’s the best thing about OTF we meet you where you are but push you to be better.
Chris: How about coaches?
Mark: At Orange theory, you’ll get the energy of a group workout with the attention of an experienced personal coach. Our coaches are knowledgeable, encouraging and committed to helping you meet your fitness goals. Our coaches are available to give you tips on making sure your form is correct, stretching, foam rolling and being an overall support to each person that comes into our facilities.
Chris: How can people join?
Mark: You can start off at orangetheoryfitness.com. You can search by zip-code and schedule a class. The first class you go to will always be free. If you are in the DC metro area, my studios are in Northern VA and one in DC (Navy Yard) so come in and check us out.
