Back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting 29% of adults in the US.
The most common type of low back pain is non-specific, which means there is no identifiable cause of the pain. This type of back pain significantly decreases with appropriate management and exercise.
The objectives of treatment through physical therapy are to increase movement and functionality, decrease pain and educate on proper maintenance to prevent further pain. At SetPT, our experienced therapists are fully trained in helping you develop the most effective treatment protocol for your unique condition.
Causes of Low-Back Pain
There can be many causes of low back pain, ranging from trauma, tumor or inherited abnormalities of the spine.
Most typically, however, back pain is non-specific. This may be due to lack of flexibility in the hip or leg muscles, weak core muscles or arthritis. This can lead to increased stress and pressure on the tissues around the spine.
Should I see a Physical Therapist for Back Pain?
About 90% of the time, acute low back pain resolves on its own over the course of a few days or weeks.
Chronic low back pain, however, is more difficult. This back pain lasts for longer than four weeks and can be effectively treated by a physical therapist. Your physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation of your strength, flexibility, and function and formulate the best treatment approach for you.
Effective Physical Therapy Treatment for Low-Back Pain
Exercise has consistently been shown to be the best treatment for non-specific low back pain.
Improving the flexibility of the muscles in the lower back and hamstrings can reduce low-back pain significantly and aerobic exercise on a stationary bike can greatly reduce back pain. Improving the strength of the core stability muscles greatly reduces pain, as much as 60% according to some studies.
There is no single approach that cures all back pain. The best approach is a personalized one that includes specific exercises and activities that address your unique issues. If you are suffering from low back pain, schedule an appointment to start with your initial assessment from a SetPT therapist to get started on your road to recovery!
