SetPT is shining the spotlight on our physical therapists. Our goal here is to ensure their patients are safe and sound, preventing injuries and recovering properly. Over the next few weeks, we will post our recurring series to take a closer look at our physical therapists to hear a little bit more about them, their career and why they do what they do each day.

This week, we’re putting the spotlight on Physical Therapist and co-Founder Erika Muraski. Read on to find out why she has such passion for bringing her patients one-on-one personal attention and her background as a competitive figure skater.

In 2007, Erika founded SET Physical Therapy with Stacy Hund. SET Physical Therapy reflects Erika’s unique background and her dedication to her patients, who, if you ask, will tell you that her caring nature and passion for her job set her apart. But for Erika, she just feels lucky to be doing a job she loves each and every day.

As a former competitive ice skater, she learned about the demands of high-level competitive sports. Throughout her childhood, she skated seven days a week, six hours a day, in addition to off-ice training classes and school. Her experiences with skating gave her the discipline, drive and work ethic necessary to achieve any goal she undertakes. It also gave her an understanding of the needs of athletes, as well as the pure joy of movement.

A subsequent car accident in her late teens abruptly ended her figure skating dreams due to significant injuries. It is that experience that allows her to understand the rehabilitation process and its impact. When treating patients, she believes in trying to keep the patient active unless necessary.

Erika graduated from Boston University with her Master’s in Physical Therapy in 1993. She started her professional career working in all aspects of an orthopedic hospital setting but was quickly frustrated for both herself and her patients in that setting. She returned to school in 1997 to pursue an MBA in Healthcare Finance, hoping to figure out a way to make a difference.

Upon graduating, she ran an offsite outpatient clinic for the hospital where she learned the finer aspects of running a facility. Her frustration continued, however, with the number of patients she was required to treat by the hospital administration and with the quality of the care which she was able to offer.

This led her to create the current model she uses. At SetPT, Erika sees one patient at a time for an entire session and devotes all her attention and energy to that single patient’s needs. It is imperative to her to understand the patient and not just treat a diagnosis on paper.

Erika lived in NYC for 19 years, and she will tell you that she is still a “NY’er” at heart. She currently resides in Rowayton, CT with her husband, her spirited 7-year-old daughter and their cat, Bailey. Living by the water, Erika enjoys paddle boarding and kayaking, and she is an avid exerciser up for trying anything. She knows if there is a new trend out there that her patients will be doing it, so she likes to learn all about it! She is passionate about helping her patients, hunting for bargains, home improvement shows, and her family.
